Hello BSU Family! đź’śđź–¤
The votes are in, and we are excited to announce the 2026–2027 Madison College Black Student Union (BSU) Leadership Team!
First, we want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our officer election process. Whether you submitted your name as a candidate, completed a survey, cast your vote, encouraged another student to participate, or supported BSU along the way, your involvement matters!
BSU is more than an club. It is a community built on connection, representation, culture, leadership, and creating opportunities for students to be heard, supported, and empowered.
🎉 Congratulations to Our Newly Elected Officers!
Please join us in congratulating:
-
President: Jiheib "Eli" Anderson
-
Vice President: Nathan Akwenuke
-
Secretary/ Communication Officer: Destiny Blackman
-
Public Relations, Communications & Outreach: Nevaeh Jackson-Winters
We appreciate your willingness to step forward and serve your fellow students. We look forward to seeing the ideas, energy, and leadership each of you brings to BSU this academic year!
📣 Two Leadership Positions Still Available!
We currently have two open positions:
1. Treasurer
The Treasurer helps BSU manage its finances, maintain accurate records, work with the advisor on funding, and support the organization’s financial planning.
2. Events & Fundraising Coordinator
This officer helps organize activities, coordinate events, develop fundraising ideas, and create opportunities for students to engage with BSU and the broader campus community.
Both positions are wonderful opportunities to develop leadership skills, gain hands-on experience, strengthen your résumé, and make a difference at Madison College.
📜 What Do Our Bylaws Say About Filling Vacancies?
Our 2026–2027 BSU Bylaws, Article VII, outline the following process:
"If only one eligible student seeks a position, the current student leadership may appoint that student by majority agreement. If two or more eligible students seek the same position, members shall vote by an announced in-person or electronic process."
The bylaws also state:
"Vacancies may be filled at any time using the same process."
What does this mean for interested members?
If only one eligible student expresses interest in a vacant position, the current leadership team may approve an appointment by majority agreement. If two or more eligible students are interested in the same position, we will hold an announced election so members can vote.
Our goal is to keep the process fair, transparent, and welcoming to everyone who wants to serve.

A brief explanation of why you would like to serve
You don’t need previous student government or leadership experience. What matters most is your willingness to learn, collaborate, follow through, and contribute to BSU's success.
For now, I will continue serving as Acting Treasurer to support a smooth transition. Once the Treasurer position is filled, I plan to transition into the Leadership Transition Coordinator role to support our officers, preserve organizational knowledge, and strengthen BSU for future student leaders.
🌟 Looking Ahead
Next steps include meeting with our BSU advisor, welcoming and orienting our new officers, setting meeting times, identifying our goals for the academic year, and planning activities that reflect our members’ interests and needs.
We also encourage everyone to continue participating, even if you are not serving as an officer. Your voice, ideas, and presence are essential to making BSU a thriving organization.
Leadership is not just about holding a title. It is about showing up, creating opportunities, and leaving something meaningful for those who come after us.
Congratulations again to our new officers, and thank you to everyone who helped make this election possible!
Together, we will continue building a BSU where students feel connected, represented, valued, and empowered.
đź’ś Help Us Grow Our BSU Family!
Bring a friend, invite a classmate, and help spread the word! BSU grows stronger when we bring new voices, perspectives, and ideas to the table. We encourage every member to invite at least one friend or fellow student to join BSU, attend a meeting, or participate in an upcoming activity.
You don’t have to be an officer to make an impact, and you don’t have to identify as Black to support our mission. BSU welcomes students who are interested in learning, building community, celebrating Black culture, and supporting one another.
We are also excited to build relationships and explore opportunities to collaborate with other Madison College clubs, student organizations, and campus departments. Whether through co-hosted events, cultural celebrations, community service projects, educational activities, or leadership initiatives, we believe working together helps strengthen our campus community and creates more opportunities for everyone.
Have an idea for an event, partnership, or collaboration? We would love to hear it! We encourage you and representatives from other student organizations or clubs to reach out, share ideas, and help us create meaningful experiences together.
Let’s make this a year of connection, collaboration, inclusion, and growth.
Each one, reach one, and together, let’s grow! 💜🖤
With appreciation and excitement,
Annette Crowder
